Apples are good for kids

Children Love Picnics

Children are experts at the concept of a picnic as they take food to lunch each day and sit down with their friends. They love finger food and being able to have little tastes.

Always choose seasonal and fresh food for children that tastes good. Apples are in season in October and Batlow recommends Red Delicious.

Breakfast on the Bridge is special occasion so we can have naughty and good treats. Picnics are the perfect occasion to help children to discover and appreciate different tastes and food cultures.

Remember – It is early, children are likely to be “starving Mum”! Involve children in planning the picnic and use the occasion as an opportunity to spend time together and cook something the day before.

Tips for keeping your picnic green

Picnics allow you to control your waste and the impact on the environment so try to:

  • Avoid using excessive plastic food packaging – use plastic storage containers instead.
  • Reduce your food miles - buy produce and product locally produced in NSW. Ask at your local Farmer’s Market, supermarket or favourite deli. You will also be doing your bit to support our farmers and local suppliers.
  • Go homemade! Take some time to prepare your picnic goodies in your own kitchen instead of buying them.
  • Don’t buy bottled water - fill up at home .
  • Don’t use plastic plates instead use a picnic set or light weight ones from home, they will look better too.
  • Plan your picnic well so you don’t waste food.
